Egrel v. New Kansas: A High Court case held that the Federal Fugitive Poppet Act superseded a New Kansas law called the Kansas Freedom Act that prohibited poppets from being taken out of New Kansas and into servitude, no matter their previous state of servitude in the domed cities.

Case background

A poppet woman named Margaret was taken illegally by Resurrectionists to New Kansas from Santelouisa, where she had once been property to a man named John Ashore. In New Kansas, the Resurrectionists claimed she lived in freedom and independence. Ashore’s heirs decided to reassert their claim on her as property and hired Grave Hawker, Simon Egrel to recover her.

Simon Egrel led an assault and abduction on Margaret in Liberty-Lawrence City, Kansas territory. They took Margaret to Santelouisa where she was destroyed by Ashore’s heirs. The four men involved in the recovery were later captured by Resurrectionists and tried under the Kansas Freedom Act which appoints penalties for Grave Hawker recoveries and the ultimate fate of the poppets returned. Egrel and his companions pled not guilty to kidnapping and manslaughter and argued that they had been duly appointed by John Ashore’s heirs to arrest and return Margaret to Santelouisa.

Egrel and his companions appealed their sentence to the High Court on the grounds that the New Kansas law was not able to supersede federal law. The Fugitive Poppet Act states that property rights are to be protected in all lands and territories of the US NOAM regardless of local laws.
